FAQ
Questions people actually ask
If your question is not here, ask us directly — we would rather answer it than have you guess.
Using the service
Do I need a lawyer as well?
Not to use this. Many people run an employment matter themselves, and the Employment Relations Authority is designed for that. If your matter is large, contested, or involves a counterclaim, get advice. The service tells you when it is out of its depth rather than guessing.
What documents can I upload?
PDF, Word, plain text, and email (.eml) files. Scanned documents and photographs of paper go through OCR. You can also paste text straight in if that is all you have.
How long does it take?
The guided questions take most people 20 to 40 minutes. Drafting is a few minutes after that. The slow part is gathering your documents, which you can do across several sittings — a case stays where you left it.
Can I edit the draft?
Yes, and you should. Every paragraph shows the source it came from and the fact it relies on. Change anything that does not match what actually happened.
Accuracy and law
How do I know it has not invented a case?
Every citation is checked against the source corpus before a document is produced, and a draft will not generate if an authority cannot be verified. That stops fabricated citations. It does not prove the authority helps you — read the sources, which are linked from each paragraph.
Where does the law come from?
Statutes and regulations from official New Zealand legislation sources, and judgments from the Employment Court, the Employment Relations Authority, and NZLII. Statute is searched first; case law is used to show how a section has been applied.
Can I rely on the deadlines it calculates?
Treat them as a prompt, not as advice. They are calculated on New Zealand working days and public holidays from the dates you entered, and each one shows its starting date so you can check the working. Missing a limitation period can end your claim, so confirm every date independently.
Will it tell me if I have a good case?
No. It handles procedure and drafting. It does not assess merits, value a claim, or advise on settlement — see the terms.
Privacy and security
Who can see my documents?
You, and anyone you explicitly share a case with. Data is scoped to your tenant, files are stored under a path derived from your tenant and case identifiers, and every access is written to an append-only audit log.
Is my case used to train AI models?
No. Your case material is processed to produce your documents and for nothing else. See the privacy policy.
Is what I type privileged?
No. We are not a law firm and no solicitor-client relationship is created, so legal professional privilege does not attach to material you put into the service. This matters if the other side seeks discovery.
Can I delete everything?
Yes. You can delete a case or your whole account at any time. Audit log entries survive deletion because their purpose is to record what happened, but they hold identifiers and actions, not the contents of your files.
This is not legal advice. LegalAI provides plain-language procedural guidance and document assembly. It does not advise on strategy or settlement, and it is not a substitute for a lawyer. You remain responsible for what you file.
